Nubble Lighthouse elopement in York, Maine: Michelle & David
I have to be honest. When Michelle first reached out to me about photographing her Maine elopement, I was immediately drawn to this one. An intimate ceremony. A coastal York setting. A couple who knew exactly what they wanted and why they wanted it. This was always going to be a special day to document.
Michelle and David met later in life, and from the very beginning they moved with intention. By day three they already knew they were in love. Less than a year after meeting, David asked Michelle's father for his blessing and proposed on her favorite stretch of beach in Destin, Florida. When it came time to plan their wedding, they made a decision I deeply admire: instead of a big production, they chose an intimate elopement that centered the people who mattered most.
They chose The Viewpoint Hotel in York, Maine, a stunning coastal property perched right across from the iconic Nubble Lighthouse, and kept their guest list to their closest family members. No wedding party. No formal reception. Just vows, the Atlantic Ocean, and the right light. If you're dreaming of a Nubble Lighthouse wedding or an intimate Maine elopement, this one is for you.
Getting ready at The Viewpoint Hotel, York Maine
I always love arriving while getting ready. It's where the day's energy lives before everything begins. The talented Aly from @thairpybyaly had Michelle glowing, working her magic while Michelle sat in front of the most gorgeous asymmetric mirror in the bright, airy suite. The whole scene was unhurried and genuinely joyful.
Then Michelle stepped out onto the balcony with a glass of champagne in her satin "Bride" pajamas, closed her eyes, and let the sea air and the moment just settle over her. The ocean stretched out behind her. The dress was hanging. It was about to be real.
Meanwhile, David was getting ready with a smile that gave everything away, adjusting his blue patterned tie by the window and absolutely beaming. That smile did not leave his face once.
The elopement ceremony at The Viewpoint, York Maine
The ceremony was on the lawn of The Viewpoint Hotel at golden hour, and I'm not exaggerating when I say the setting was staggering. Nubble Lighthouse sat perfectly framed in the background, stunning white arrangements from @hillsideflowers_gifts overflowing with garden roses and greenery on either side. Just enough white folding chairs. The whole thing felt like a painting.
The incomparable @marriedbylb officiated, and the ceremony itself was everything. David read his vows from a small card, quiet and focused, while Michelle stood across from him wearing the biggest smile. She laughed through her own vows, the best kind of laugh, the one that's just pure happiness spilling out. Both fathers and all the people they love most were there. Everything they had chosen and prioritized to make that moment happen was right in front of them, and you could feel it.
After the ceremony, the newlyweds welcomed family on the lawn while Michelle stood glowing in her elegant flutter-sleeve gown, white roses and baby's breath bouquet in hand. It was one of those moments I just kept shooting because I didn't want it to end.
Cake & champagne at The Viewpoint Hotel
After family portraits on the lawn, Michelle and David cut their white rosette cake on the hotel's stone terrace as the last of the afternoon light came in warm and golden. Two bottles of prosecco. Crystal coupe glasses. A gold geometric cake stand. Every detail was intentional and beautiful.
And then they completely dissolved into laughter the second the cake knife touched the frosting. That's the shot I'll remember. Michelle's head thrown back, David grinning like he'd gotten away with something wonderful. Completely unposed and completely them.
Sunset portraits at Nubble Lighthouse, York Maine
This is the part I had been looking forward to all day. We started on the rocky ledge right on The Viewpoint's property as the sky began to shift, that early golden glow hitting the granite just right. Then we made our way over to the coastline at Nubble Lighthouse as the light went fully rose gold and the lighthouse began to glow against the sky.
The crashing waves, that light on the water, Nubble right there behind them. It was everything I'd hoped for when I first started planning this session in my head. Michelle and David held their custom "We Eloped" sign, engraved with their names, their date, and York, Maine, and stood right there on the rocks while the Atlantic did its thing. Michelle's veil caught the wind just perfectly. I kept having to remind myself to breathe and keep shooting.
And then their dog showed up in his "Wedding Crasher" bandana, and honestly? Best portrait of the day. I dare you to look at that little face and feel nothing.
"Meeting later in life, David and I knew from day three that we loved each other."
Congratulations, Michelle and David. Here's to a lifetime of sunsets like that one!
